This was caused by a single variable-valve tuning solenoid - one of two on the engine. It was about 450 dollars with labor to have it replaced.

Maybe it's not the lifters and it's the oil pump. As the car was idling the noise quieted down (until we gently revved the engine) - then it got louder.
