the bit with the magnetic fingers and the ballon/bucket hands are simply suggestibility tests, which are a good way to see how well people can follow directions and imagine things... however, when you get response you have some level of hypnosis. the "induction" was a shock induction to "formalize" the hypnosis and help them go "deeper" (or become more suggestible). This was the very first time either of them had ever been hypnotized.
