Princess Anne attended the memorial service to honour the hundreds of people who lost their lives in Victoria's bushfires on behalf of the Queen of Australia.

The Princess Royal read a message written by the Queen of Australia soon after the bushfires occurred.

"Although a little daunted, when faced with the scale of loss, and the physical and mental impact that these bushfires have made and are still making for Victoria, individuals and towns have responded with resilience, ingenuity, courage and selflessness to situations that were changing at terrifying speed," Princes Anne said.

Princess Anne added her own condolences to the bushfire victims, and said she would visit some of the affected areas tomorrow.

"I would particularly thank all those involved in whatever capacity, in the emergency services and in the voluntary organisations," she said.

  • From my recollection of the broadcast, until the Princess Royal's address, there had been silence after each address. Hers was the first to receive applause... it says something about the power of a personal message from the Sovereign

  • I think this was a very fine moment, a speech in which tghe Princess Royal communicates, so clearly, the Queen's horror, sympathy and admiration, and also the Princess Royal's. The entire family has been a great support to those who have suffered, and I was moved to think of The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall coming, with such honour and such concern, to the memorial service in London.

  • Thinking about my friends down under , Im now living back in the UK but brought up in Preston, Bulleen and Lalor 1966 to 1972 . I watched the news during this sad time and was deeply shocked God bless Australia

  • Princess Anne is simply an exceptional person. Intelligent, dignified, poised, beautifully dressed and yet very down to earth. Hard working, as any look at her calendar reveals, and justly admired.

  • HRH the Princess Royal is a hardworking member of the Royal Family who, despite an increase in recognition, is still not fully appreciated. Her resemblance to HM The Queen is remarkable.

  • @BozokinUnitedKingdom Yes, HM The Queen is Queen of Australia

  • Honestly...we have to stop the republicans from trying to ruin this country.

  • To ladynw777. Australia has no established church. Your reference connecting HRH The Princess Royal to HM the Queen as the Supreme Governor of the C of E is irrelevant in respect of Australia

  • no religious word from the daughter of the head of the church of england
