Here's how FXCM's No Dealing Desk system works.

Bank Prices: More than ten market makers feed prices to FXCM. Our Best Bid/ Offer Engine (BBOE), selects the best Buy price and the best Sell price, creating the best spread available. Next, FXCM automatically adds a markup to either side, typically about 1 pip on major currency pairs. This markup is how FXCM makes money. The best spread plus markup is shown to our clients on their trading screens as a tradable price.

Straight Through Processing: The trader, Bill, decides to buy Euros. Bill's order is sent though FXCM's automated Straight-Through-Processing system and an exact matching order is sent from FXCM to the bank with the best Buy price. To the bank, all orders appear as Market Orders from FXCM and contain no information about the trader. Banks cannot see Bill's stops or limits.

Confirmation: The bank fills the order and confirms with FXCM. Confirmation is sent to Bill, and the order is complete. No matter how much profit or loss Bill makes on this trade, FXCM earns the same amount of money -- that markup.
