Desi Arnaz, who had just died five days earlier following a long bout with cancer, had written a touching statement for this event, which is read here by Robert Stack. (Lucy had to fly almost immediately to Washington following Desi's funeral in order to attend this event.) Lucy struggles to keep her composure, but the mood quickly changes when Bea Arthur, Valerie Harper and Pam Dawber come out for a musical tribute to Lucille Ball -- a musical medley of WILDCAT, MAME and I LOVE LUCY, set to special new lyrics.

"I don't know what I would have done if I hadn't had this thing to keep me occupied. Desi died and my show got canceled. If I hadn't had this, if I hadn't this reassurance that I was still wanted, I don't think that I could have gone on." -- Lucille Ball, speaking about the Kennedy Center Honors.

This is the final of three parts. The links to the first two parts are as follows:

  • Lucy was so happy during that song Bea Arthur sang, that was so beautiful, We all STILL love you Lucy we miss you so much!!!!

  • After Desi's words were read, watching Lucy makes me want to cry because she's crying. 'I Love Lucy was never just a title' and I'd like to add 'in any of our hearts.' And then after the tears have formed, and the guy announces for Bea to enter, so to speak, she gets all excited, like a little girl. And THIS is why we have and always will love Lucy(:

  • I had tears in my eyes when i watched this. When the letter was read, anyone can see that it really touched her deeply. Its good see that couples who had to split can still love each other.

  • @ripdaddyinthehouse probably like you may have loved her but i got her in the end

  • @BatmanFan1966 that it will in my acting class at school last year we said that Lucy was the number one comedian of all time fallowed by Carol Burnett

  • @PinkCowgirl925 Very nicely said young lady. I'm turning 45 at the end of this year, and my earliest memories of childhood include seeing reruns of "I Love Lucy". I'm very pleased to have 5 of the 6 seasons of the show on DVD, but more pleased to see that people who are age 90, or 65, or 44, or even 16 all love Lucille Ball. The magic that is Lucy permeates all space & time, and will last for at least 10 thousand generations.

  • @ripdaddyinthehouse , he referred to Desi as his ex-husband-in-law.
