So this is a mic test for my new vocal mic, the AKG C414 XLii. I chose the first verse/chorus of the acoustic version of 45 because, most importantly, Shinedown is incredible and I've always tried to be half as good as Brent Smith. This is the first time I've put anything up publicly. But also I wanted to do something with two distinctly different styles of vocals. If anybody has any tips on how to record the louder vocals better, please feel free to share! Especially when it comes to keeping them from sounding too compressed, despite the fact that compression is pretty necessary at that volume. Cool, well let me know what you guys think! Also, sorry the audio quality seems so degraded. You'd think youtube would be able to handle standard 16-bit 44.1 Khz, but apparently not...

  • Lot of hiss. What produces it?

  • @ArhiCO it's partially poor compression on YouTube's part, but it's also something I could've dealt with before hand by doing the right compression out of Logic.

  • My tip to help prevent the "compressed sound" when singer louder is to set up two compressors in series. The first one, set a lower threshold and a mild ratio (2:1 is good) so it evens out the vocals without getting rid of the dynamic feel. Then set the second compressor with a higher threshold and heavier ratio to act more like a limiter. Ratio at maybe 5:1, and watch the input level as you get to the loud vocal parts. This compressor should only kick in slightly at LOUD parts to tame them.

  • @iviaverick52 thanks man, I'll try that out next time I'm doing really loud vocals (which is actually pretty soon on some original stuff).

  • holy shit man u are fucking amazing u sound almost exactly like brent smith y arent u pro man??

  • @DaMastaWil hey thanks for the kind words. I'm certainly working on it!
