'Kalaripayattu' (Or simply 'Kalari')- Mother of Martial Arts
'Kalaripayattu' is an ancient martial art of Kerala. The term 'Kalari' denotes a gymnasium, where proper training is imparted for mind as well as muscle. 'Payattu' means armed combat with different varieties of weapons. 'Kalaripayattu' is a nerve-racking and dangerous mode of armed combat in which an expert 'Kalari' trainee can either kill a man or maim him for life by a simple thrust at any one of the vulnerable parts in the opponent's body.
'Kalaripayattu' is the exclusive martial arts legacy of Kerala, taken to China by the Buddhist monks which became the fabled model for the modern martial arts. Buddhist writings show that 'Kalaripayattu' flourished during the 5th Century A.D. The founder of Sen Buddhism, Bodhi Dharma, had visited the southernmost part of Kerala, stayed here for a pretty long time and learned 'Kalaripayattu'. Bodhi Dharma had gone to a place known as Shaolin in China and there he taught his disciples 'Kalaripayattu'. All the modern day martial arts such as Kung-Fu, Karate, Judo, Kick-Boxing, Capoeira,Kenpo, Muay Thai, Savate,Soobak,Shaolin,
Taekwondo,Taekyon,Wing Chun,Wing Tsun etc. are believed to be originated or derived from 'Kalaripayattu'.

@bismara1 try to take them one on one. It "seems" ineffective because the very heart of Kalari teaching is not about violence.

I'm just sick of reading all these degrading comments. Under the veil of anonymity you suddenly become an expert and know everything. These guys in the videos take on their training since they were 4 or 5 year old. All you know is theory and biased judgement based on your inexperience.

I'd like to see you take them on..

The 1st Shaoiln Temple was built in late 5th century AD. Boddhidharma might've arrived there in late 5th or early 6th century AD.
Chinese had engaged in warfare since 2nd millennium BC. Martial art/military training continues to evolve and adapt since then. Some styles predated the existence of Shaolin monastery. While others were brought in and modified/perfected there. Many others were family styles developed independent of Shaolin. Conclusion: kungfu/wushu is Chinese.

No, unless you consider spaghetti to be chinese food too, heh heh =)
What i meant was, chinese ma that did not derive from Shaolin, do not owe their existence to Kalari whatsoever. The arts that developed in China, by all means is chinese.
