Denis Matthews (1919-1988) was a prominent player on the British musical scene, especially in the 1950s and 60s. Later in his career his scholarly inclinations were fulfilled by his appointment as Professor of Music at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. A pupil of Harold Craxton and protégé of Myra Hess, his playing seems to match Harold Schonberg's characterisation of English pianism as "urbane, seldom passionate and seldom even dramatic, but never closed-in". The LP cover shows no date, but from its appearance, I would guess that the recording was made in the mid-1950s.
Dating from c.1725, the Italian Concerto comes from the second volume of Bach's Clavier-Übung (keyboard practice).
Yuldashevgiorgi, good for you. Look forward to hearing and enjoying them!

I enjoyed this fine Bach performance very much , I like to hear a strong L.H, in Bach playing and Denis Matthews specialized and favoured this composer particularly . It really lives again for me. Thankyou for posting.
