my favorite symphony of all time and I'v had the pleasure of playing it at a good standard. But as a bass trombonist it makes me slightly bias.

The Alto Trombone needs to play B4 at 7:30. That's extremely high, as it is in between the sixth and seventh partial. If you listen to von Karajan's recording with the BPO, you'll hear the embouchure strain from the Alto (and perhaps even Trumpets and Tenor Trombone) even more.

This must have been recorded decades ago. Giulini died a year or so ago at age 90. How old does he look here? 70 something at most? In 2006, the CBC announced that the orchestra was making a come-back after an 18 year absence.
Indeed, Giulini was a great conductor, but he so often frustrated me with slow tempos and other interpretative ideas I happened to disagree with. Even the score for the finale here is marked "not fast," I think the composer is better served by ignoring this..

I rather like him, yes. In an antique store, I picked up a vinyl recording of him conducting the CSO playing Mahler's 1st Symphony. It was only later that I found out that it won the Grammy for Best Orchestral Performance in 1972.
