In this era, I had the option of watching Crossroads at 6.02pm on Tyne Tees, or 6.05pm on Granada or the final chance of the night on the clearest picture of YTV at 6.35pm

Just occured to me - the BBC regional bulletins were still at 6.00 at this point, because Nationwide was still going (just) and then there was Sixty Minutes for a bit - they didn't move to 6.30 until September 1984. So Tyne Tees probably decided that they couldn't compete with Mike Neville and so didn't go against him, whereas most other regions showed their news up against the BBC version.

Unfortunately, this particular Tyne Tees showing of Crossroads had been preceded by the first BNP election broadcast.

It was around this time that Tyne Tees bosses were trying everything to beat Look North with Mike Neville - hence Northern Life here is starting at around 6:30pm (out of step with most, if not, all regions around the time). AFAIK, Look North kept winning in the ratings until Mike was poached to present North East Tonight.
