Neuronal axons are known to form by growing out from a stationary cell body. Dendrites, in contrast, are now seen to form when a short directed migration of the cell body drags out a neurite that is anchored in place. Formation of the sensory dendrite (in red) as shown here, in a living C. elegans embryo depends on the tectorin-like DEX-1 and DYF-7 anchoring proteins.
