April 13, 2009: Annenberg Research Seminar - Lisa Parks

Join students and faculty for a presentation by Lisa Parks, associate professor and Chair of Film & Media Studies at the University of California at Santa Barbara. Her topic: Goodbye Rabbit Ears: Visualizing and Mapping the US Digital TV Transition. From Dr. Parks: Exploring how technical information about digital TV has been communicated to the public in the months leading up to the transition, I consider how consumer-citizens are being addressed in public outreach initiatives, as well as how they are negotiating the digital TV transition. In the process, I highlight three issues: 1) the way fixed income and minority communities have been singled out in relation to television; 2) the uneven geographies of the transition; and 3) the way viewers and digital corporations have responded to the transition in its aftermath.
