I designed this simulation to illustrate the consequences of a terrible flux design across a heat sink. THIS IS ONLY A FIRST APPROACH: The meshing and solution methods aren´t high-quality.

The CPU is modeled as the heat source, just beneath the heat sink. They are both aluminum-made, whilst the fluid is air modeled as a compressible ideal-gas. Heat is transfered by conduction between the heat sink and the CPU, while it is conducted by convection between the sink and the fluid. Air enters via a round inlet, whilst exiting through a ventilation grille.

The fluid heat extraction isn't very efficient for the following reasons:
-The air suddenly passes from the inlet into a wide-section cavity, thus producing a sudden drop in speed, turbulent backflow and thus a general energy lose. -Neither the inlet nor the outlet are centered with respect to the sink; this involves an inefficient and unbalanced heat transfer across the sink, because of the unbalanced heat flow across the various fins.

  • Cmon, I'm just a student and you're a teacher. I just read the user's guide and played with it a bit 'til it worked.

  • which model did you used (k-epsilon, laminar...) ?

  • @elramas01 I used the standard k-omega model.

  • I don´t understand your question :S

  • How would you define a forced convection within air flow rate in Ansys?

  • @Kitesurfguru I don´t understand your question :S

  • hi, i use cansys work bench i'm a teacher but i don't know how to do this simulation, can you help me i promise to give you credits on my clases

  • @lequi7 Defining air flow but I figured that CFD must be used for this. Now I am working on defining a heat pipe..

  • can you teach me how to perform this?
