@TheGeneralTiger in his situation, he knew where the attacks were coming from, and intercepting the strike early was actually better than giving his opponent a chance to swing low at the legs.

question: if some one is throwing tiny little things at you and you have a big fucking shield, do you (a) use the shield or (b) jump out the road?

The tiny little thrown things represent magic. If they touch any part of you (including your shield), you must take the effect of the spell.
Actually, one of the best defenses against a thrown spell packet is to toss the shield in the way. Letting go of the shield severs the connection to you, hence the spell is deflected and you don't have to take the effect.

There were module-specific effects in play. I believe this was a dream sequence, hence the power-up for the youngling.
