Artist Point, 7-14-2009. The earliest opening ever of Washington State Route 542. This magical Washington State Hiway winds up through the Mount Baker Ski Area and up to a fantastic place called Artist Point at 5400 feet! This is where part of The Deer Hunter was filmed. In the last scene of the movie, Robert De Niro is hunting a big buck, behind him is all the drama of Artist Point and Mount Baker. After he stalks and beads-up the beautiful buck, he chooses at the last second to let the DEER go free and shoot OVER its head symbolically ending the suffering and killing he had just been though in the movie. Its the last and I think the best scene in a great great movie. All material here including music created by Thomas Michael Lyons - COPYRIGHT TML2010

I found your video by Googling "artist point washington." At the top of the list was a WDOT notification that, this year, the last two miles of the road would not be opened at all. Just too much snow. Earliest opening two years ago, latest opening (well, NON-opening just two years later.
Great photos!
