Sorry Pete I have to correct you on a couple of things. The Wave Knight is Royal Fleet Auxiliary Ship and not a Royal Naval warship. Its main role is to resupply the Royal Navy. Its crew consists of some naval personnel but mainly its made up of merchant seamen. It's armament consists of a Phalanx Gun (which is used for Anti Missile defence) and two 30mm guns. It has a deck area that will allow a Merlin helicopter to land but not one on permenant attachment and has no missiles fitted.

In the original news coverage the Chandlers sounded like idiots sailing into dangerous waters but it must have seemed totally safe as there was a navy ship there! Something doesn't add up. In relation to the original story 3 weeks ago this story has had very little coverage. I thought in Britain we were supposed to have the best navy in the world?

5 stars. The somali pirates, Al CIAda and the Taliban are all useful pawns in setting up grand moves on the chess board. As unemployment rises, financial systems get worse, and maybe a little rationing because of all the "ships" the pirates have taken! Escalating military activities may then be justifiably increased to soak up the spare workers and used to dominate resources in the middle east and africa.

Ross kemp done a great doc on piracey, how the oil companies destroy their way of living, and the insurance scam on the vessels and it's cargo. Somalia is being alot bold by targeting civilians.
Could the navy have disstinguished the pirate vessel from the normal sailing ships they use for fishing etc, not sure. as for engaging them after the piracey is a no no, taking aim on a moving ship and to engage another moving ship, to tkae out it's occupants is a huge challenge
