Everyone compares musicians as if they're at war with each other and it's just dumb. Of course Victor Wooten is technically better than Matt Freeman, but the difference is Matt Freeman plays in a PUNK band playing what he feels fits, it's not about showboating, it's about serving the music and for a band like Rancid, Matt's definately doing his duty.

im tired o bassist telling me, a bassist, that a bassist is not good if he plays with a pick, personally, i dont like picking a bass, but hell matt is amazing at wat he does and we love him for it, fuck it if u dont like it dont bitch about it, but hes got talent, look at his hand, i know some thrash metal guitarist that cant play close to that speed, so fuck off if u think he sucks

I completely agree with you! I, too am a bassist and I switch between finger and pick at almost every show. Its not better or worse, its just different. Picking gives you more of a treble "bite" that is great for punk, metal and even some funk lines. I find finger preferable when playing hip hop, reggae, soul, and blues. You can see me use both styles in the blondes of vertigo video "Changes" basically I want to say aspiring bassists don't let anyone tell you one way is better!!!

o.k., look, for all you guitarists who think a bassist has to play w/his fingers, let me tell you something, as a bassist. if you're playing rock (metal, rock, punk, whatever) you have to be well versed as both a fingerstyle player AND a pick player. there are guys who you see predominantly using their fingers or using a pick, but that doesn't mean they're any worse than the other guy. Matt Freeman is one of the best living bassists out there now. i love his technique. so fuck off you "purists"!
