Good thing it was running the other way when it freaked out. HA Ha. The red light is a good thing to help keep the disturbance down. I think you are right about the number of visitors. The ranger actually told me it was for the most part the high frequency noises produced by most electronics that we can't hear. She compared the noise to the high pitch when a flash is charging on your camera and higher frequencies as well. The bats hear them loudly and are driven nuts by them.

@rabidpensfan ... just an interesting note...we got clearance for shooting bats at night with red lighting at Devil's Sinkhole in Texas. Not as disturbing. The guide told us he recently walked alongside a wild badger with a red light for quite a while then turned on the regular light...it freaked out and ran off. The mass number of visitors to Carlsbad must be the reason for tight concerns.

It in fact isn't just disturbance by light. It is also high frequency noises that electronics produce. It screws with the bats because well, you know, they use high frequency sonar to locate targets/obstacles. I saw the bat flight once, it was amazing, and I think it should cost a lot more than a few dollars to get into Carlsbad. There are too many disrespectful idiots running around inside that could care less about what they are seeing. Too many idiots.

oops...shannon's channel is closed ...musta been IN-discretely calling folks 'jerks'!

absolutely true ...it's all about disturbance by lights ...nothing else. What are we missing here ShannonKupe? Fill us in please.
This video was taken discreetly and did NOT affect the bats in any way. The reason for them not wanting people to take video is because people tend to use light and flash which scare the bats. No light nor flash was used in this recording.

It's because of jerks like you they don't allow people to film the bats. Thanks a lot.
