This is a tribute to my little Dutch rabbit called Snuggle paws, he sadly passed away on 4/4/10 I cant tell you the exact time because he was at the vets and they gave us a 85% chance he would pull through an operation to grind down his teeth, we adopted little snugs when he was 3 ½ and he always had trouble with his molars developing spurs that would protrude into his mouth albeit gums & cheeks. Every 4/6 weeks that would result in him going to the vets and a £60 fee to have his teeth ground down, during the days why his teeth got painful he would so be withdrawn and so not his lively happy lucky go self often hiding in places to be alone. But after the vets he would come home and be as right as rain and full of life n rainbows, the last time this happened he didnt eat or show any fullness of himself, we called the vets and they instructed us to give him the recovery science food. That was hard to do as little snugs didnt like a syringe poked into his mouth and it wasnt nice for me to administer. I had to do this on a few occasions before and he seemed grateful for the nourishment. But this time he turned his little muzzle away as if to say I cant eat this! It was the bank holiday of Easter and the vets was closed on the Friday so I cud only try my best to feed him the recovery food. He was just finding places in the house to hide and be alone. I cant really say much about his life before we adopted him only he lived in a tiny hutch. When we got him we brought a massive hutch and kept him indoors during the day, and put him in his home at night with a cover (inc ventilation) at night to shield him from the elements and any unwanted attention) soon we realised he didnt like going into his hutch and we introduced him into the house. It was learning curb to house train him. But he got the hang of the litter training and would go on a towel we had with a plastic under sheet. The rest was plain sailing he was the most delightful young man always running up to us for cuddles n nose rubs, around 10pm he would climb the stairs n go into my bedroom that we shared and happily stay there till the morning when I would pick him up and take him down stairs. During the night I would cuddle him and watch television with him he was most content. Even on the morning jumping on my bed to wake me up as if to say hey sleep head Im awake time for Snuggle cuddles, lol.
The day we took him to the vet he examined Snugs n said his tummy was empty and he had gone into a stases there his stomach had gone into an arrest and wasnt working. He told us that with drugs they could resuscitate his stomach and gave us a 85% recovery hope, we didnt have no reason to doubt him, the next day at 10am I got a call from a girl whom was obviously assigned to go in and feed the pets, saying Snugs had passed away! I nearly dropped the phone. And had to ask could she call back in 20 mins as my throat gagged, we arranged to pick up his body within the hour. I collected my little hunny and brought him back home, my Dad took him out of the box and placed his lifeless body on out sofa in the living room he used to play in. Uttering the words your home now boy my mother and I had tears welling up, his body stiff with rigor mortis, we wrapped him up in a fluffy towel and buried him in his fave part in the garden.
The last few days I have spent crying. Im a lad in his mid 30s and this little bunny really made his mark in my life. I dont cry normally. But Im gutted and the pits of my guts have been ripped out missing my little snuggles.
Any Rabbit owner out there if youre Rabbit shows any signs of ill health get him to the vet ASAP and dont take a chance. I wished with hind sight I didnt listen to the advice of the surgery receptionist saying just feed hi recovery food. She isnt a qualified vet. If I had not listed to her my little Snuggles might have had a chance to have had the stomach resuscitation.
Your Rabbits give you unconditional love they trust you and there naturally cautious, if you gain a rabbits trust dont let him/her down they love you!
I miss my Snuggles so much.
Please dont make the mistake I made.
