0800072 - Developing and Producing the B-61 - 1970's - 26:29 - Color - The B-61 thermonuclear bomb, first produced in 1966, has developed into an extremely flexible weapon. Its many different modifications has made it able to fill the multipurpose needs of the military. Major modifications were made to the B-61 in 1966, 1975, 1977, 1979, and 1991.

Designed by the Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory in northern New Mexico, the lightweight bomb could be delivered by the Air Force, Navy and NATO planes at very high altitudes and at speeds above Mach 2. The 141.6-inch long, 13.3-inch diameter bomb averaged approximately 750 pounds, but actual weight varied with each modification.

  • I used to load these, and B57 nuclear weapons on F-111's. When they were still around in the '90's. The "silver bullets" were a lot of fun to load. Especially with an armed sentry watching your every move.

  • I had a model F111 as a kid that I was very proud of. Thanks for your service, and for watching.

  • childern of today do not understand the concept of MAD. they have no self control if they have a toy they must play with it untill it breaks. Mabey its best we disarm them. this generation is just dumb and lacks responsibility. Look who we put in the white house, some one that takes full responsibility for an oil spill ? spends 700 billion on the rich without creating a job?

  • Ya! Like a retropoulation birth control device for some of the fucking idiots posting their tripe and drivel here on youtube. I am dismayed by the lack of intelligent or knowledgable exchanges of information here on the youtube. Your generation, kids of the 80's and 90's, are about the most unintellectual group of people I have ever had the dipleasure to talk to. If its not a video game or a music video, you are pretty much lost aren't you???????

  • I was the armed sentry at Plattsburgh and I'm still watching you

  • Which is why America has more or less been continuously at war since 1943.

  • We should "dispose" them in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

  • Thanks for the vid.

BTW, ever come across a film on the Mk41/B-41?

  • ...and thank you for your support. It was a great job. Nothing else has come close.

  • Why can nobody appreciate the B-61 as a thing of beauty?
