Why do you always sweat so much inside your waterproof jacket? Probably because it isn't a very breathable material.
At Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2011, Scott Trepanier taught the WELD team the basics of waterproof breathable materials and how they impact the performance and comfort of outdoor gear.
Specifically, Trepanier points out the very low breathability of Gore-Tex. Even though the material is extremely waterproof, it doesn't allow for the exchange of air — meaning moist air will build up on the inside of a garment, getting the wearer just as wet as if she didn't wear a rainjacket anyway.
The Columbia display at OR — just like a simple science fair project — makes it easy to understand the advantages of their Omni-Dry material. Trepanier said that, for an innovation to be successful, the customer has be able to easily wrap his head around the product and its benefits.
