This is the sesquicentennial of The American Civil War Years and Living History is our passport back through time. Here, in the State of Michigan, we are extremely proud of all of the men and women who help keep our history alive. We must not permit time to erode the events of the past from our memories. Both heroism and tragedy, are part of our collective culture and have served as the foundation for what we have become as a nation and a state. Living History helps strengthen our ties to our ancestors and allows us to revel in the triumphs and successes of those who gave so much in the name of patriotism. It was because brave men and women of all races and ethnicities chose to sacrifice their lives for each other and to answer the call of their country, that we are all a free people, in one nation, under one flag, united.
