Grave of the Fireflies and Schindler's List are THE best war movies ever made. They both show what war really is about, the harsh truth and the struggles that each and every person has to go through.

@CheezTiger I also wanna recommend "Full Metal Jacket", but this one's a movie which everyone who doesn't live under a rock has seen. :)
