Ronald Reagan signed the largest tax increase in the history of the state of California in the spring of 1967 and, to proved that was no fluke, signed two more before he left office. He increased the operations portion of the budget by 85% in eight years. Tax brackets were narrowed to soak the middle class. Income tax revenue doubled, sales tax revenues tripled and property tax revenues quadrupled. The budget more than doubled during his tenure. Conservatism at its' finest.

The NY state budget went from $2.04 billion in 1959–60 to $8.8 billion in his last year, 1973–74. Rockefeller sought and obtained eight tax increases during his fifteen years in office.

Barry Goldwater was indeed correct in saying that 'extremism in the defence of liberty is no vice', for it is indeed not a vice, but a complete and total defeat of liberty. Had only Nelson said that, he could have stopped the GOP from becoming the ant-taxation religious right bullshit party it has sadly become. But that's just wishfull thinking.

If you ask any conservative what that stands for and I guarantee in the first 5 words will be the term "limited or small government". Based upon that definition, you can count the conservatives in Washington on one hand. When was the last time that government actually shrank from one year to the next? It wasn't but ten years ago that the GOP doubled spending in Washington when they controlled congress and the executive branch.
