Try swimming your self up with the paddle instead. This is only good for when you have no friggin idea where you are. Try going the other way about it and start with learning it as a parry, from there go deeper and deeper.
also, try not to move your hand up the paddle, just keep each hand about 5 inches from the actuall blade, otherwise the roll is slow because you have to change your paddling grip to your rolling grip, in whitewater that makes the difference, that is the reason no whitewater kayakers use the pawlatta roll unless its all they know, as oppose to sea kayakers which dont seem to mind!

what r they doing there?
i think this kind of roll isn't very good or 'easy'
when you move the paddel backwards, you should get compression on the paddel not just when its allready moved.
so get the compression when you are still moving it backwards, not when your are moving it under water...
test it, it's easier!
in germany all kanu slalom paddlers do the roll as i descriped

i keep mine above the surface, then as soon as it hits the water i hip snap and go more backdeck, i just got it yesterday, it was my first roll

the hip snap was really good but the paddle in the water wants to be closer to the surface, if possible on the surafce. other than that good job.
