Koto Concerto - Varem

Varem, concerto for koto and orchestra.
Duration: 27 minutes.

This piece was commissioned by the UMA Kamerorkest of Utrecht, The Netherlands, in order to celebrate the 10th anniversary of this ensemble. Varem is a composition that emerges from silence and returns back into silence. It is based on the Hindu diagram Sri Yantra. It uses three different kotos: the traditional 13 string koto, the 17 string bass koto, and the 21 string koto. It is dedicated to Makiko Goto.
