In this episode, we dive into the life and works of legendary comic book writer and Cleveland native Harvey Pekar with the 2003 film American Splendor starring Paul Giamatti as Pekar. We'll look at Harvey's own back story and his friendship with the famously eccentric illustrator Robert Crumb that led to the creation of the American Splendor comics, the personal autobiographical stories Pekar would put into comic book form. We'll check out the film that perfectly captures the quirky atmosphere of the books, see what's on the DVD, and, finally, I'll give my final recommendation. All this and more at your online destination where movies are celebrated, not incinerated. Check out more videos at HappyDragonPictures.com!

  • @Williamsfan Thanks! I decided to not include this little bit of info in this review, but the first time I ever watched American Splendor was the day before Harvey died in 2010. I bought it from a Used DVD store because I'd always wanted to see it even though it had been out for years. Then coincidently, I decide to watch it one day, then the VERY next day, it was announced that Harvey Pekar had died. I'll always remember that whenever I watch this.

  • This movie was the best.

So sad to hear about Harvey! May he rest in peace.

    Love the review!

  • @Hewylewis Yeah, gotta love Criterion. Maybe I'll take a look at that. I'll admit I haven't many of the Godzilla movies, but the original would probably make for a good episode. But, it'll be a while. I've already got movies lined up until Episode 20. Stay tuned!

  • @happydragonpics No problem, man! I totally wanna see this movie now!! Thanks! Oh, still hope you review a Godzilla movie. Maybe a DVD by Classic Media or the upcoming Criterion Blu Ray release!

  • @Hewylewis It was okay. Okay enough for me to own the extended cut on Blu-Ray. It was just a movie that popped in my head when it came to including a montage of superhero flicks. And, yeah, there are way worse comic book movies out there, although I'm not a hardcore fan of Green Lantern comic books. Thanks fer watchin'!

  • Does this mean you like Green Lantern? Because I don't think it deserves the critical bashing it got.
