I'm a poor grad student - if it wasn't for scholarship money I would be homeless and starving lol

simpsons hasnt been funny in over 10 years, it needs to be euthanized

its not like that in the US. In the US, grad students are brought in as cheap labour. Things are vastly different in Europe. On my trips to Europe, I realized that I did not have to be ashamed of being a grad student. People respect learning and science and education in Europe; in the US people will think you are stupid and lazy and they do not distinguish between phd work and their 2nd grade book report. I'm so glad I have my phd now.

that's ridiculous and RUDE! how can you infer that from a simpsons episode? grad students are thoroughly appreciated here! I am very proud to be a PhD student in the US, thank you very much.

I am not inferring that from a Simpson's episode. I completed my phd in the US. I never saw this clip until a little while ago.

Well. maybe you are in a different town. But I remember just how condescending people used to be when I told them I was a grad student.

Sample quote: "Like a grad student take the train". Note: I am not the one insulting those who take the train; the speaker is. She is indicating that those who take the train are the low underclass...like grad students.

Are you a starting PhD student? You sound like you have stars in your eyes. I sympathize with you because I used to be where you are.

It is possible things have changed over the last year because the economic collapse has taken the wind out of the sails of many people. These days people have begun to understand that a 9--5 job is perhaps not such a thing to be proud of after all. When I was doing my phd in the boom of 2006, they thought i was just being too lazy to work at a "real" job.

I agree with Mrparrot ... sadly .. i am a grad student and this is so true ... hopefully my Phd will come soon

thats not always right....
then again i have been told i dont live life of grad student :)
