I agree.  The President of Ireland actually does a job - she has the democratic legitimacy and personal ability to represent the country and the people she is elected to serve, and she can personally exercise some limited but potentially important constitutional powers. The Queen, on the other hand, neither represents us nor protects us.

I find it INSULTING and IGNORANT to refer to our presidents as "presidents of Ireland". The IRISH people in The Six Counties have not been consulted during the elections so ... how can Mary McAleese be president of "Ireland". To add insult to injury, we are ignoring the oldest province in ALL Ireland. We are suggesting that, somehow, they are "not Irish" when we call McAleese president of Ireland. Can we not get this straightened out once and for all? Does anyone n ot study geography anymore?

First of all, Mary Mac is NOT the President of Ireland. She is the President of THREE QUARTERS of Ireland. Now that we have established that fact, let's take a closer look at her and her predecessor, Mary Thing. They get HUGE salaries (over four thousand quid a week) and HUGE INDEX-LINKED pensions (over two grand a week) for doing ... what? No wonder Dana and all the others fight like tooth and nail to get that job. We already have a Prez of Europe. Do we need another one in Blaw Clee?????
