  • Helen Merrill... Fantastic !

  • Priceless tape. I'd never have guessed a meeting like this in a million years. Merv came up as a boy singer in Freddie Martin's band. He knew enough what not to try on this occasion. He had lots of charisma, and enough faith in musicians--madcaps like Jack Sheldon--tp turn it over to them on occasion and take his chances. Carson, for all his greatness, was above all about control. His genius was in not letting it show.

  • Merv may not have been a jazz singer but give him points--he was hip enugh to book Helen Merrill, and he pretty much kept out of the way on the tune. O'Connor didn't go too far into the musical abyss, either.

  • Piano: Roger Kellaway, Bass: Chuck Domanico, Drums: Johnny Guerin. L.A. dream-team.

  • A great clip! Thanks for posting.

  • Good post

  • Sun 12 Aug 20007. RIP, Merv Griffin
