Priceless tape. I'd never have guessed a meeting like this in a million years. Merv came up as a boy singer in Freddie Martin's band. He knew enough what not to try on this occasion. He had lots of charisma, and enough faith in musicians--madcaps like Jack Sheldon--tp turn it over to them on occasion and take his chances. Carson, for all his greatness, was above all about control. His genius was in not letting it show.

Merv may not have been a jazz singer but give him points--he was hip enugh to book Helen Merrill, and he pretty much kept out of the way on the tune. O'Connor didn't go too far into the musical abyss, either.

Piano: Roger Kellaway, Bass: Chuck Domanico, Drums: Johnny Guerin. L.A. dream-team.
