Its an addiction, some might say, while others think of it as recreational. In any case, video games have become a dominant force in our modern society. From gory battles between unnatural forces to adventures with mystical creatures, video games are full of imagination and edge-of-your-seat action. But can video games be educational as well? Sid Meier, director of creative development at Firaxis, shares his vision of finding fun in history, economics, politics and culture through the world of gaming.

  • @74u73hjd: Well, that's definitely true to a level.........that's one of the reasons I loved Civs II & IV. I gotta start playing them again soon.

  • Heh. That's Michael Bell's voice for the intro narration, yes?

  • Where can i get this program

  • It is not the kind of education you can get from a book or lesson. If Gron cant afford an education for economic reasons, he is better off studying on the internet, wikipedia is a good, easy introduction to almost any topic.

Games can provide the intuitive understanding and passion for the subject, and they enhance certain skills which are valuable outside of games themselves. But i wouldnt say they will give you a terribly deep education.

  • Well, most kids learn to use the computer and even the internet through games - I think learning that through a text book would be awful and not as productive. Non-English speakers can and do learn English from games. There are more examples, like learning strategy and problem solving, and much more. Games are actually the natural way of learning. Of course, we don't have games that can substitute all forms of educations, but no one is making that claim.

  • I always take the scientific path... ;)

It allows you to build science eve faster, and if you advance in science first, the military expands faster than if you advance in military first... I think...

  • Yes, but you can't cure aging with your strategies. It takes engineering on sub cell level. And if senseless science will fail, your games will be over before your 100 th birthday. BTW, can you count the time you allowed to be young in seconds? Awfully small, ain't it?

  • fuck Sid Meirers games are so shit AOE or RON is the way to go on any level

  • and this music is about to make me manic
