Bach Chaconne by Ann Fontanella. Bach Chaconne is Bach's dark masterpiece that scholars believe was written as a funeral dance after his first wife died. Heifetz played many of Bach's solo pieces (including the Chaconne) while supporting the troops in WWII. He couldn't bring a piano to the front lines, so solo pieces were required. I play this in the uptempo and romanticized style of Heifetz.

  • very beautiful

  • What is a definite "plus" of this video are the serious comments. For instance, I was suspecting that this legendary dance was composed under tragic circumstances, however now I aware of the speculation that it was composed upon Bach's first wife's death.

    Excellent!

  • Muito bom... :D

  • I love how you educate us all in a pretty amazing way! Thank you Anne!

  • Dear Ann, Bach's Chaconne is my favourite piece and I've listened to so many different versions. I came across your video today in my laboratory and was totally immersed! I closed my eyes and saw (or heard!) the "shadow" of Heifetz - whom I still think was the greatest instrumentalist of all time! You infused this piece of the deepest human emotions yet retained complete and utter clarity. I never had the chance to watch Heifetz plays live - I hope I can watch you play this live one day...

  • Dear Ann, I'm from Brazil and I love your songs. God bless you all.

  • Oh, this is just wonderful. :) You've done such a great job with this piece.

And you know, I'm really no expert, but I always thought that Bach meant "stream" in German.... not "baker." And I also always thought that a "ch" in German did have a slightly more guttural sound... or at least was pronounced NOT as a hard "k." Just saying. In any case, the way she pronounces "Bach" has no impact on her extraordinary playing, or our enjoyment of her extraordinary playing. Or it shouldn't.
