I hate that this show flopped on B'way. It was SO much better than the critics let on.

I am sitting here in shock that the original production of my favourite Sondheim musical has been posted. And to top it off Ann Morrison on the recording is one of the main reasons I fell in love with musical theatre. It was the first show to move me, to inspire me and to this day, I know that it will be recognised for the masterpiece it is. I cannot even begin to imagine how all the original members of this production felt when it flopped. Sorry to gush but I'm overawed by this posting. Thanks.

OMG! Hooray!

God, I wish it was easier to find footage of the original production! I love Ann Morrison's voice to death and would love to have seen (been ALIVE to see) the original Broadway production.

@ndtaam I am an enormous admirer of Sondheim, but only recently came to know this show through the original cast recording. What has leapt out at me, beyond the greatness of Sondheim's lyrics and music, is how fantastic your singing is. I work as a coach with classical singers, and I have been tempted often recently to urge the singers I work with to refer to you on the 'Merrily recording as an absolute model of English sung diction; indeed, perhaps the finest I've ever heard. You are superb!

Wonderful! I never knew the original had been recorded. Thanks!

pudgeuncle thank you! A friend sent me your comment on this youtube and I am so glad for your view of my work then. We were all so devastated after Merrily closed that we were all so forgotten at the Tony's after hearing all year leading up to our opening that we were in a Sondheim/ Prince show so we would all go far. I never thought the "going far" would mean far away from the Broadway scene. I have a great life creating theatre still and very happy.
Bright Blessings

One of the biggest Tony travesties ever...that Morrison was not even nominated. I saw the first and last preview. Jim Walton was a terrible replacement for the original leading man and the production values were downright awful, especically the pool made out paper that ripped down the middle. The costumes were just hideous.

WOW. Amazing what turns up..!
I agree! Saw the 3rd preview and then later in the run. There was chatter about Lisa Mordente's nomination the same season for an okay performance in a bad musical MARLOWE near to the TONYs. Morrison did win a THEATRE WORLD AWARD for this and has may fans it seems from the recording.
