Two recruit intakes (Nos. 081 and 082) totalling 120 new soldiers had their Passing Out the Square parade today at Luqa Barracks. The first intake completed their training between April and June earlier this year. For the second intake some 360 applications alone were initially received by the AFM. Subsequently, 109 enlisted to start their basic military training on the 18th of August.

All AFM recruits are trained in basic marksmanship with individually-assigned weapons, field maintenance of weapons, hand-to-hand combat, physical fitness training, first aid, protective equipment usage, as well as military and classroom instructions.
Recruits posted to the AFMs Maritime Squadron learn skills such as basic seamanship, basic survival techniques, shipboard firefighting, basic engineering, and signals, with a particular focus on water survival training.

Recruit training is a unique period in any soldiers career, not just because the recruits are subjected to the usual "boot-camp" atmosphere of yelling and intimidation. They must adhere to strict rules such as hygiene and uniform regulations. The passing out parade denotes completion of recruit training for the new AFM inductees. This ceremony is significant in marking the transition from recruit to soldier, and is often a very emotional one as the recruits are both physically and psychologically drained after the grueling ordeal of the final stage of recruit training.

Female AFM recruits receive gender-integrated training.

The 4 Regiments training cadre of instructors is led by recently promoted Lieutenant Nicholas Grech. Six former officer-cadets, commissioned last Tuesday as Second Lieutenants, will be on parade as well in the Colour Party and in-charge of the four recruits squads.

The 25 recruits from intake 081 were qualified with O-levels and trades, 4 of whom are already serving at Maritime Squadron. The bulk of the remainder possesses a basic academic knowledge with a number of various trade diplomas, including a number of bandsmen.

  • Prosit tassew lil min organiżża din il parata. Ħadt pjaċir nara lil ħuti Maltin, nisa u rġiel, bl-uniformi, u jimmarċjaw b'pass wieħed. That if nothing else will bring Malta further in the foreground of World News.
