if you tell the patient you are checking their respiration, they may alter them. generally its good just to tell them you are checking their vitals, so they don't think about how they are breathing.

@blacknight1313 Great point. It it reason why nurses check breathing first while we are holding the patient's wrist for the pulse, so then patient feels relax and thinks that we are checking their pulse not breathing at that time.
