Watch this instructor-driven 944 Turbo run away from my 220 rear-wheel-HP 911 on the backstraight. For years I mistakenly believed all 944 Turbos were this fast. Then I slowly realized this was one of the few 944 Turbo's I couldn't keep up with in a straight line. This car is a real sleeper, and the fastest 944 Turbo I've witnessed in 25 years! Of course, if you ask him, he'll tell you it's just a stock 180,000+ mile motor. And that's actually mostly true. But if you run into him on the backroads of TN, consider yourself warned!

  • Yes! That's the guy!

  • What happened at the end - wheel off the track or a locked up caliper or something else?

  • @jjbare It's a torsion-bar 911 but I run a dual-spring coil-over set up in the back and my shop got the corner weighting wrong. So one of the coil springs fell out of it's hat, causing a weight transfer under braking, so one of the rear tires snap locked, spinning me. If you listen to the audio, you can hear the spring go "clunk" when it falls out of the hat. Very scary. Could have been disastrous at other points on this track.

  • One of the rear coil springs fell out of it's hat, causing a weight transfer and one of the rear tires to lock under braking. As a result, I now corner-weight the car myself.

  • I just got my 944T and can't wait to hit Tail of The Dragon with it and also some PCA events.. But will tell you one thing.. No matter how fast I make it.. It will never sound like your car does from the driver seat.. LOVE IT! BTW his SS exhaust is a sure sign its not a stock setup ;)

  • @hothatchpa My 911 has B&B headers and a $100 flowmaster muffler. Skipped the B&B muffler ($1,000) because they tend to explode. So this was a cost-saving move. But I love the sound. It just screams, and nine years later, it hasn't exploded from all the "rich fuel" flares that build up in short 911 exhausts, even the non-turbos Carreras like mine.

  • old skool 911 3.2 - best sound of any 911 ever!! forget the water cooled 911s.

  • Great video Jeff!! Hopefully more to come

  • @Phasterphaster I knew it!!!!! He really taught me alot of stuff on that track! =)

  • maybe chip tuned?.... my 944T only with chip pull 232 rwhp and 304 lb/ft

  • I think I know that guy....Lawrence Coppoli or some last name like that (he was my instructor). I was at the last CCA (March 5-7 2011) hosted by BMW, and that dude is fast in that car....and he was also from TN!

  • Bone stock it has 217hp - the Turbo S makes even more power! bone stock!

  • I know that amazing old 951 and it has well over 180,000 miles with nothing more than rod bearing replacement a few times. This car never breaks down and is driven from north TN to Road Atlanta several times a year. The power is tweeked, but nothing outrageous. A real sleeper indeed.
