  • 1987 was an interesting year since we were starting to see the introduction of Electronic Controls for Transmissions and later on in 1988 and 1989 the engines. Once the Clean Air Act was introduced in 1990 we saw the introduction of full electronic engine packages whose sole purpose was increase fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. Whether they were successful or not is a different story lol. AWESOME COACH!!! 8960 is a pure CLASS ACT!!

  • that some hell of a driving at the end, those buses were so easy to operate you could put them anywhere buses today cannot compare.

  • @jmjfanss

Yeah, and the transmission would more than likely have the electronic controls. The engine is more than likely MUI'd; I don't think WMATA ever installed DDEC systems on any bus in the 8700 series (8700-8960).

  • @MetroLinerXLZ

it's electronic controlled and has fuel ecomony.

  • @jmjfanss

The transmission perhaps (ATEC controls), but I don't the engine is. IIRC, this bus came with a "Green Grenade" 6V92 (MUI, no electronic controls).

  • @MetroLinerXLZ

    but it's also electronic controlled.

  • @GRTCrid3r

Same as this bus. Detroit Diesel 6V92 engine, Allison V-731 transmission (with modified gear ratios).

  • @MetroLinerXLZ what was the drive train for GRTC'S old 800s

  • @MetroLinerXLZ i strongly agree wit u

  • This just oozes with pure 6v92 goodness. That tranny slippage (into 3rd gear) reminded me of how some of the GRTC's old 800s were with their modified gear ratios.

Seems like that bus has plenty of life left! I'm surprised it hasn't been broken apart on those Baltimore streets.
