A chinese gybe for Ericsson 4 during Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09 in very heavy seas and storm force conditions. Helmsman Tony Mutter talks us through it.

  • @paguscorvi Ha ha No a Chinese is a gybing situation where the top half of the rig goes one side and the bottom half remains on the same side. I suppose it gets it's name from the Chinese junk rig a fully battened mainsail rig which was I suppose prone to it as was the western gaff rig . I think they put a strop on the boom going downwind as they are here to stop the boom slamming across if they get into trouble so only the top half goes across if they accidentally g so "a chinese Gybe"

  • so where was the chinese? ...like those visors though:) bummer they fog up however

  • @Alysum They had a leg from Singapore to Qingdao (Leg 3)

  • I didn't see a chinese in the video ?

  • What a beautiful boat.

  • Must be quite unbelievable stresses and strains on the boat, never mind the crew members.

  • "chinese". glad to be on shore and ordering kung pao chicken instead.

  • Losing steerage under those conditions - better have skipper that's cool under fire.
