Born the son of Russian-Jewish immigrants into the vibrant life of Manhattan, George Gershwin created much of the twentieth century's musical highlights, with an endless stream of hit shows. His fascination with classical music, and his fusion of many varied musical forms like jazz, blues and ragtime, brought us the likes of Porgy and Bess and Rhapsody in Blue.

Three Preludes for Piano (running time : 6:48)

Gershwin's Three Preludes for Piano of 1926 are in jazz idiom, but reveal the composer's interest in presenting this material in a recognizable classical form. The first Prelude sets a right-hand melody against a characteristic bass. This is followed by a piece based on the Blues and the group ends with a burst of greater energy.

Terribly sorry. Just a technical error when it was being saved beforehand.

  • Technically proficient, but you could acknowledge the rubato markings in the first and third - ask yourself, What Would Gershwin Do? The second movement, much more virtuosic, but don't swing the dotted's - he wrote he what he wanted you to play. I'd like to see more dynamic contrast as well, especially in the first and third. Good ending on the second, but I think you could hold the pedal down a little longer to give more resonance, with a gentle lift.

  • you know you have them out of order, right? :-P

always nice to hear the way someone else plays it. third one is my favorite.
