I could see how that would affect him so heavily... the song is about his mother who was deeply religios, then she had a stroke was partially paralyzed for 27 years (roughly 10,000 days) until she eventually died. part one is his recognition that his mother will soon be dead and part two is her getting her wings and going to heaven.
