January 7, 2009 -- Wildlife experts are trying to figure out what's making California Brown Pelicans so sick. They are finding weak, disoriented, and bruised Pelicans around the state. Rescuers in the San Diego area have taken in 25 pelicans since mid-December that appeared to be suffering from a mysterious illness. Reports of disoriented, malnourished and dead pelicans have come from Washington state to Baja California in recent weeks, said Rebecca Dmytryk of the nonprofit group WildRescue in Monterey, which is tracking the phenomenon.

Last year, I saw close to 500 dead pelicans on a SINGLE beach in southern Baja. There were lots of other dead birds, but pelicans were the most numerous. There weren't any big storms down there, so i don't think the storms are responsible. there is a serious illness affecting them.

IBRRC centers in both San Pedro and Cordelia are overwhelmed with sick Brown Pelicans, both juveniles and adults. No bird is turned away, and all are receiving good, personalized care.
