James Kalm is privileged to bring viewers a brief overview of this astounding sculptural retrospective of Martin Puryear. The works in this exhibition represent over thirty years of developments and trace the arc of Puryear's stylistic advances from their Post-Minimalist beginnings to his unique place in contemporary sculpture. With his sensitive use of natural woods and simple hand tools Puryear has reinstated the importance of humanistic content within Modernism. Featuring abbreviated remarks by Museum of Modern Art Director Glenn D. Lowery.

  • Thank you for the video. I find the policy of no videos in museums very frustrating. Some guards take the policy very seriously others could care less. With almost every other person with a digital camera or camera phone snapping away many using flashes I find it unfair. Have you considered a tripod ? The Met lets you use tripods with permission. Loved this show and Martin Puryear and I thank you for the record even if I did feel a little seasick after watching it.

  • michaelkahn,

Yes I've thought about a tripod but the point of the "Kalm Report" is to capture the art world unaware, no time to rehearse or phony things up. Nothing intimidates and changes the attitude of those being recorded faster than a big camera with lights and tripod. Nearly all the Museums I've been in have a no tripod policy.

  • I'm running all over town on a bike, no way to haul boxes of equipment or props. When I show up at these events many times they won't even allow still photography so I have to go on the "low-down". Don't worry, if you keep watching you'll get your sea-legs, thanks JK

  • Thanks for doing this James. Great show.

  • The 'wrecking ball on crane' piece is also very biomorphic, stongly resembling a kushed camel, or South American camelid (such as a llama or alpaca), obviously notsuperficially, but in the structural presence of the piece and its structural feel.

  • wow, my new favorite artist...I can't believe I missed out on this, 3 years passed already.

  • Great Job! Keep em' Guessin'

  • Thanks. I saw this exhibition at SFMOMA. I'm glad to be able to see the work again.

  • Thank you very much.

  • Thanks James. This show just opened at SFMOMA. Caught a quick glimpse at the crowded opening but will have definite return views. Great commentary and details of the works. Appreciate your shooting on the sly!

  • I like the vid, not 2 b critical but i just want to say, it's "sit-ka" spruce not "stick-a" spruce, isn't it?

  • Thanks James, great commentary, thought of doing a painting based on the quality of your voice.
