Since there have been a lack of videos describing this process to a bunch of new surfers looking to move away from longboards, I've made this video to make it easier to see what to do exactly.

Key notes:
I put my hands flat on the board, therefore not using the rails to push up

ARCHING THE BACK is KEY

Look forward once you're up, and even while you pop-up. Looking down = falling down.

Use your knees as little as possible!

Good luck!

  • can you keep the fins on while doing that?

  • Probably not the greatest idea, but yea I do, since I was trying to simulate the pop-up on land in the most unstable conditions.

Since the fins on the bed fall on an uneven surface (i.e. the bend in the bed changes as my body weight shifts), it's harder for me to balance, and makes the pop-up feel much closer to reality then doing it on the ground.

  • I will try and post a pop-up video from the side! I'm just getting back from a West Coast Canada surfing trip, so I will do the best I can to post another vid! Thanks for all the comments!

  • far to way back from the board buddy

  • For a shortboard, you do NOT want a wide stance. Try doing any sort of trick when you're squatted down like a chick trying to piss.

  • i hope you dont have fins on

  • is it just me or was he going too slow?

  • very very good he looks like a pro!

  • MMMM more like starting the day with yoga on a bed board

  • horrible footing and pop-up

  • dude what board is that? sweet Vid btw

  • @ShortSurferBoy not like a lot of wax. just so much that its not slick, you cant even see it its so little.

  • @Rustyrunaway Umm no offence, but why the HELL would anyone wax their rail? It's a quick popup and if the surf gets big I'd rather not be doing something creating excess drag that could cause problems...

Push up from the board, not the rails... And besides, I never wax near my rails and never had a problem slipping when doing a popup :/

  • pretty narrow stance

  • are you supposed to grab the sides of the board when popping up or push off with hands down?
