Decades of aggressive privatization have shifted the burden of risk from government and institutions to individuals and families. Two of the nation's leading social scientists, Craig Calhoun and Jacob S. Hacker, will hold a public conversation addressing the many complex issues at the heart of risk privatization. Professors Calhoun and Hacker will also address what policy-makers can do to better protect American families and workers who struggle with the financial strains of finding and keeping a job, managing health care and prescription drug costs, preparing for retirement and old age, and sustaining their wealth and investments.

Professors Calhoun and Hacker are co-editors of a new book series published by the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) and Columbia University Press, drawing on the insights of dozens of social scientists to shed new light on America's risk shift along with creative policy solutions. The event marks the release of the series' first three volumes, on health care, unemployment and pensions.
