The release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 saw thousands of gaming fans queuing outside stores at midnight today.
722 UK stores and 10,000 US shops opened their doors overnight to mark the launch. 700 people in central London are reported to have been eagerly awaiting the release.
The current first week sales record of 800,000 is held by Grand Theft Auto 4, released in April 2008.
But Modern Warfare2's pre-order sales had been 50 per cent higher according to Amazon. And the game's publishers, Activision, are predicting total sales of three million.
In the run up to Christmas consumers could see a price war. The UK console versions are retailing at about £54, but some supermarkets such as Tesco and Sainsbury's are expected to sell it for just £26.
