MaximsNewsNetwork: 07 January 2012, WorldLeadersTV: Bangkok, Thailand - The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia-Pacific (UN ESCAP) presents a video about its history and its future as the hub of UN activities in the 48 countries of the Asia-Pacific region.
Dr. Noeleen Heyzer is the Executive Secretary of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, ESCAP, and holds the rank of United Nations Under-Secretary-General.
Since taking office in August 2007 as the first woman to ever occupy this position, Dr. Heyzer has championed institutional change and developed ESCAP as a regional hub to help build stronger economic and social foundations for sustainable and inclusive societies in the Asia Pacific region.
Dr. Noeleen Heyzer, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, ESCAP, presented Asian leaders with a new development plan that is less reliant on exports to the West but places emphasizes instead on greater connectivity within the region.
Dr. Heyzer spoke in Cha-am Hua Hin, Thailand, at the Fourth East Asia Summit, that brings together the leaders of the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Australia, China, India, Japan, Republic of Korea and New Zealand.
Headquartered in Bangkok, United Nations ESCAP is the largest of the UN's five Regional Commissions in terms of its membership, population served and area covered. The only inter-governmental forum covering the entire Asia-Pacific region, ESCAP works to promote sustainable and inclusive economic and social progress.
