Academia's role in society is rapidly evolving. The "ivory tower" is crumbling and the "engaged university" is taking its place. This transformation is driven by economic pressures, technological advancements, globalization, and the changing needs of the university's clients. This past August U-M's Business Engagement Center (BEC) hosted the annual conference of the Network of Academic Corporate Relations Officers (NACRO). For three days 200 attendees representing 85 universities and 30 companies from across North America shared best principles for university-industry collaboration. The BEC is widely regarded as a leader among research universities in connecting industry with higher education resources. This video captures highlights from the opening plenary session, which brought together representatives from higher education, economic development and the federal government to discuss the impact of these changes.
