ANCHOR:
The great Indian summer is showing all its fury. The eastern state of Orissa is already in the middle of a severe heat wave. Temperatures have topped 42° Celsius in most parts of the state since last week. Let's take a look.
STORY:
Here in the capital of Orissa people are just staying inside.
[Rajesh Tripathy, Bhubaneswar Resident]:(male, hindi)
"The weather has broken all records this year....It's so hot here... The sun is immensely hot...Its so difficult to survive in such hot and humid weather. Since four, five days ago, the situation has become worse. The people who have to go out to work have no option but to bear the brunt of the heat."
The more well off head towards roadside stalls selling cool ice candies and watermelons to beat the heat.
According to the local meteorological department, the sharp rise in temperature is due to dry hot winds from northwestern India.
[S.C. Sahoo, Orissa Meteorological Department]:
"The temperature is increasing due to northwestern dry hot winds from the northwestern part of India towards Orissa coast. At day time, we are experiencing cloud free sky. So these are the reasons causing rise in temperature."
Temperatures are expected to soar even higher. Wind patterns from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea indicate that there is little chance of rain. And the sea breeze is still absent, offering no relief for residents.
Make that 3.
