Yeah; when they abandon a line, they rip up the tracks to sell for scrap or re-use!

In 2008 when this video was taken, the railroad had been back in use for almost 7 years. I worked on the crew that rebuilt the tracks through tunnel 8 and tunnel 16 and was also a conductor on the sand trains that ran from the deset floor to Campo and we were constantly encountering hikers and mountain bikers on the tracks. The railroad is definitely not abandoned.

The only thing using those rails are the Border Patrol vehicle and some rent-a-cops. The rail line has been embargoed (shut down) for over a year now due to lack of maintenance, safety violations, fines, and the rail company running out of money. You won't see a train on these rails for many, many months to come -- and it's been that way for over a year.

The railroad is definitely not abandoned. There are still cars at Coyote Wells & Campo and locomotives being serviced at Jacumba, So don't get complacent.
