Ray Anthony came into our "most popular" list as kind of an "outsider". But make no mistake : Ray Anthony was (and still is) considered as one of the best big band leaders of the 20th century ! Playing a magically sounding trumpet he always made sure to include a great 'supporting' orchestra, while striving for original and surprising arrangements. Here Mr Anthony presents a very 'laid back' arrangement of the famous Cole Porter 'classic' "Love for Sale". This song, written for the 1930 musical "The New Yorkers" was originally considered in bad taste, and was even banned from radio airplay. Despite this treatment (or because of it ?) the song became a real hit for Libby Holman in 1931. Fortunately, times have changed :-) and the song has been recorded by many artists since then : Eartha Kitt, Tony Bennett, Julie London, Ella Fitzgerald, Dexter Gordon, Anita 'O Day and Buddy Rich are just some of the names on an 'endless' list. More recently, the song was also covered by The Manhattan Transfer and the Fine Young Cannibals.
All this proves that Cole Porter's music is "of all time" and hence his music continues to be published by artists worldwide. Here now, from the 1963 album "Smash hits of 63" is Ray Anthony and His Orchestra with a most original version of "Love for Sale". Enjoy.
